I am 54 years young, I have smoked cigarettes since I was 11 and still smoking today. I woke up this morning to a slightly red and painful tongue. Also I’m taking dexamethasone after a major back surgery; I was weaned off, but continue to take the medication. I also mix crystal light packages every day to get the maximum sweet flavor, every day. Wonder if this could be irritating my tongue.

I had peeling of the tongue in several areas. Now it feels like there are wire-like strands under the surface of the tongue. When I eat or drink anything hot or cold the strands coil up very tight and wrap around whatever is on the inside of tongue. So close to the top of the tongue I feel like I can pick it off, but can't. The tongue surface prevents me from getting to the strands. I don’t know what this is.

My tongue is a bright red color, it hurts to drink carbonated sodas. Hurts to have any seasoning on, and tooth paste on is unimaginable.

Comment from: Hurtingsobad, 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: October 15

My tongue hurts so bad and is a deep red color. Towards the back of mouth it is so dark a red it is almost purple. My taste buds can’t stand any carbonation, only very cold drinks. When I stick my tongue out it looks like it has deep cuts and very little saliva.

Comment from: MJ, 55-64 Male (Patient) Published: September 04

I had excisional biopsy on the right side of my tongue to remove a small wart like lesion. The histology report was good indicating that it was a benign polyp. It has now been 3 weeks since the biopsy and the area biopsied remains swollen and a little sore, although the pain has significantly reduced over the last 3 days. My general physician put me on antibiotics about 4 days ago but the tongue area remains swollen. I wonder if it is unusual for the tongue to take so long to heal.

Comment from: Kath, 19-24 Female (Patient) Published: July 11

I got my wisdom teeth removed last week, and haven't got half of my tongue's sensations. I cannot taste with half of it and when I open my mouth, I feel like something's pulling, like a little rubber band, and the bottom of my mouth gets stuck because this sensation is painful.

I had white spots on my tongue and skin was peeling. I went to a doctor and he told me it was fungus. He prescribed Nystatin mouthwash to swish around my mouth and spit out. For 10 days 4 times a day. It worked, and white spot and peeling were gone. But a spot still peeled remains red on my tongue. I wonder if the fungus healed completely.

There is a deep split in the middle of my tongue. It does not really hurt, but eating can irritate it and make it wider. It looks like it may split in half. I am trying to find out if there is a way to heal this.

Comment from: Sue, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: September 25

I was treated at a dental clinic in a college. They told me they wanted to scrape my tongue to do biopsy. Instead of scraping it they took two slices underneath my tongue. This will not heal, it was not done correctly, the stitches got caught on my back tooth and I had to sterilize a pair of scissors to cut it as it was bleeding profusely. I rinse with hydrogen peroxide 2 times a day but no one knows if this will heal.

One side of my tongue always feels like there is either a mat of hair or like fish scales loose on the side. I am wearing my teeth down on that side because I try to catch the skin or whatever it is between my teeth and it feels like I do, but I can't 'bite it off or catch it with my fingers or even see anything in the mirror! It is driving me crazy!

I have white tongue in so far as it is literally a carpet of white from the tip to the back end. I think it does leave off a pong and this of course worries me too. I have tried using one of those tongue cleaners but it is of absolutely no avail, as well as also applying a cream by the name of Daktarin 20 mg. I am a little perplexed at this stage and would really appreciate some kind feedback from someone else who might either have, or still be suffering with what might sound like a similar problem. Thanks for taking the time to read.

The growth of my tongue affects my speech and whenever I eat or drink something cold, it becomes difficult for me to pronounce some words. I feel like my tongue is big in my mouth and I keep biting it often.

Comment from: Nieva , 65-74 (Patient) Published: December 19

About 2 months ago my tongue got very sore, then I noticed a few days later a raised growth, tubular shaped, with a hollow center had come up on my tongue near the tip. I do not recall any trauma to the tongue before this. I do sleep with a CPAP full face mask and got a new machine around the same time. The growth is white and about one eighth of an inch high. It does not hurt. However it gets irritated with spicy food or rough food such as chips. I confess I tried to pull it off and used tweezers. The top came off but the base stayed and bled some, not much. But it has grown back.

Comment from: TerriB, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: August 08

I had part a back lower tooth break off, and my tongue became a little sore from rubbing against it. A week later at the dentist, he said I had a lesion on my tongue, probably due to the tooth, since it was directly next to it. However, he seemed concerned too, by the way the lesion looked. He told me to come back in two weeks to get it checked and if there was no significant change he will send me for a biopsy. Two weeks is tomorrow and it has gotten smaller. Also, he pulled the broken tooth.

The tip of the tongue of our year old grandson appeared to have been bitten off, but there was no bleeding and he was not in any distress. The fire department medics and myself and other family members observed this. When we took him to the emergency room the nurse opened his mouth and his tongue was pink and normal. I am not sure if he had bitten his tongue that hard to make it look like that or if he could have had an allergic reaction to his food.

I do take a lot of supplemental vitamins, but I always have done, so I don't know what could be causing it. I did quit smoking about 7 years ago, but this only started about a year or less ago.

I also have ear pain in my right ear.

I have a problem with my tongue for 3 months now and I am really suffering too much. I visited many doctors and nobody found out what the problem is. Once or twice a year this problem appears. It begins with pain when moving my tongue deep inside my mouth and after one or two days I begin scratching my tongue around with my teeth. It is very painful and none of the doctors I visited found out what the problem is so as to give me the correct meditation. I am 50 years old and since I was 28 years old I have been taking antidepressants without stop. I am also in my menopause.

I am 65 years old. I was diagnosed at age 40 with psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. I also suffer with Sjogren’s syndrome and was diagnosed diabetic type II in 2013. In November 2014 I was diagnosed with oral lichen planus with pre-cancer cells in my left cheek. I was prescribed Magic mouthwash and Oracort which does help with the burning mouth. Within the last 3 or 4 months I have been getting sharp pains in my tongue. It feels like a razor blade cutting several times over a couple hours period of time. This has happened to me approximately 6 to 8 times in total. It is very painful. I don’t know what the sudden cause of this pain is, especially targeting my tongue.

Comment from: Paula001, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: September 03

My problem started with swelling gums and bleeding from gums (sometimes, not always). I also experienced soreness, burning and whitish mass deposition in the tongue. I has it checked with a dentist. He thoroughly cleaned my gums by injecting local anesthesia and scraping the gums. He took 6 days for it, cleaning different areas of the gums on different days. Now, almost 6 months after the clean-up, my gums don't swell and bleed but the problems of my tongue remain same, no matter how much I take care of my oral cleanliness. I also have trouble chewing a bit hard foods.

Comment from: DeeLee, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: August 06

I have gluten allergy. What doctors and dentists won't tell you because a lot of them don't know, is that gluten and soy can cause mouth and tongue sores and pain, swelling and sores. While on a special diet prior to surgery I was placed on a starch free diet; only natural foods. After 9 days my mouth sores that I had been trying to cure for 1 year including having a biopsy leading to no diagnosis or cure, went away. After 2 weeks I tested by eating bread and the mouth sores started that evening. It took me three days back on the diet to flush the gluten out of my system. The sores on my mouth and tongue are gone for good. I also found soy to be a problem as well as MSG. It give me headaches and joint pains.

I has surgery in August to repair hearing damage in my ear. My taste buds nerve were cut and reconnected, and a prosthetic bone was put in my ear to replace damaged bones. But also there were issues in putting me under. They had trouble with getting the tube down my throat. Since then my tongue and saliva have not been right. My taste came back but I also have a bloody taste in my mouth along with a salty taste at times. My tongue has a whitish green coat on it too. At times I have a dry mouth too.

Comment from: HP, 65-74 Male (Patient) Published: September 04

I frequently have skin cells flaking off of top of the tongue. I catch myself 'harvesting' the flakes and swallowing them. The top of my tongue is mildly irritated beginning about 1 inch from tip. I have had my dentist examine my tongue twice. The second time he called in another dentist in the office for a consultation. He had no knowledge of this issue. He took photos and sent to an oral surgeon. He had no knowledge of my symptoms either. I have made an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist for a further exam. Irritation is mild.

I had a biopsy of the left side of my tongue February 12th for a whitish, tender area. The biopsy was negative, apparently inflammation. Still three months later, my tongue is excruciatingly sore. The area that the doctor (ENT) put 2 sutures in has healed about 6 weeks ago, leaving this rolled, small worm-like area about 1 inch long that is sore to eat, talk, and swallow.
