I was 11 years old in 1982 when I contracted meningococcemia. It was November and I was in public school in Florida. I started having severe cold/flu symptoms. In the morning I felt tired and started running a low grade fever which escalated into a high fever, headache and a rash that looked like measles starting on my feet around 7 PM. The fever quickly shot up to over 104, I had a convulsion and vomited, and that's when my parents took me to the hospital. The doctor saved my life.

Our daughter was fine one morning and became lethargic with a high fever of 103 and loss of appetite. She had purple patches on her body and was misdiagnosed with rosella the same day. She was given Tylenol suppository and nothing brought the fever down. The doctor put her in an ice bath to break fever and she never warmed back up. She passed away that evening about 4 hours later. She was 3 months old. This was back in 1980 and much has been learned about meningococcemia since then when this was a very rare disease.
