I am a 73 year old male alcoholic that drinks approximately 500 ml of whiskey with plain water as a mix almost every day. My AST/ALT blood tests are always normal. FibroScans show stage 3 fatty liver but zero scarring. I take 2 Excedrin tablets for body pain daily and blame my fatty liver on too much junk food which I am gradually cutting back on.

I'm a patient of skin allergy since last three and half years. My doctor advised me to conduct some liver blood tests. My ALT level is 68 U/L and normal level that I study in this article is 7-55 U/L, but in some other articles I have also found it is 5-40 U/L and typical range is 29-33 IU/L for male and 19-25 IU/L for female. I don't understand the different levels of ALT and what the link my high level ALT has with my skin allergy.

Interesting liver blood test, the AST/ALT test. I don't really understand it. My test results were, AST 14 and ALT 5. I thought this was good but then I read about the ratio thing and have to wonder what it all means. My ratio is 2.8; supposedly indicative of alcoholic liver disease but I don't even drink and haven't since I was in my 20s. So I don't really know what to think. The doctor didn't seem too concerned but I'll do another blood test in 6 months.

I just got my annual liver blood test done. My AST is 46 and ALT 58. I am 42 years of age. I eat plant based food, no drugs or medications. I don’t drink. I exercise light. Wonder if I should be concerned.

My AST Was 348 and my ALT was 528 in my liver blood test. Needless to say I am very concerned. I also have a dilated bile duct of 11 cm, recently had a UTI (urinary tract infection) caused by Klebsiella and have had severe diarrhea.

My 35 year young beautiful baby girl, my youngest, came home and stated so nonchalantly, no big deal, ‘well, the doctor says my liver enzymes count is 86' and I don’t know what that means. She was checked for alcoholic hepatitis and is negative. She says she is dying.

My liver blood test results are GGT 48, ALT 58, and AST 41, all considered slightly elevated. No alcohol consumption. I bruise easily. I have no viral hepatitis, not obese and am on healthy diet.

I had liver blood work done yesterday and my doctor's nurse called me with the results a few hours later. She said that my liver enzyme levels were extremely high but everything else came back normal. She said that the normal level was 0 to 33 and mine is 169, and on the other mine was 100 and the normal level is 0 to 32. My doctor ordered 2 more liver tests but I'm freaking out because no one will explain anything to me or even call me back.

I am a 54 year old female. I took free blood work exam and had AST 49, ALT 60 and GGT 132. Liver ultrasound is normal, hepatitis negative and I feel great. I exercise daily and eat very healthy. GGT keeps increasing. It was 79, 83, 102 and now 132. I take 0.25 Xanax for many years. I don’t know what the problem is.

Due to acetaminophen poisoning/overdose as well as an enlarged gallbladder with blocked stone, my highest levels within my 8-day ICU stay while over in Vietnam for vacation were: SGPT: 6,069 U/L and SGOT: 3,543 UL. Very frightening, as staff did liver blood tests 2 times/day as well as had me drink the Tylenol poisoning antidote (nasty Tang stuff mixed with water) about 3 to 4 times/day. Horrid but I had to do it to get better. The day I flew home, the pattern of decline continued and my levels were SGPT 428.6 U/L and 46.2 for SGOT.

I am a 32 year old woman, I have just seen a hematologist consultant and my GGT is high at 190, but all other tests have come back normal, so he has made an appointment for a liver scan. I stopped smoking 4 months ago and I hardly drink. The last drink I had was 2 pints over 4 hours a month ago. When I was 18 I did start drinking and stopped heavy drinking when I was 30, so maybe that's caused it.

I have been for my health check review today. I don’t understand but the nurse said my liver function today was 24, last time I did blood tests it was 2. I don’t go out drinking, just odd glass of wine with our supper, and I don’t smoke.

My ALT was 344, and AST was 270 in my liver blood test. I am recently diagnosed with hepatitis C. My primary care doctor is now referring me to a gastroenterologist. I am still waiting though for my tests results to come back, and see how damaged my liver is.

I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids last year. Three months ago my SGOT was 384 and SGPT was 532, and the following week they were down to SGOT 50 SGPT 30. Now 2 days ago I went for a blood test again and was surprised for the result- SGOT 569, SGPT 359, and alkaline phosphatase 138. I have a small kidney stone also. I don’t know what could be the reason of this abnormal values.

I am a 66 year old female diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 7 years ago. I also have arthritis, hypertension and degenerative joint disease, with many back issues. I had bilateral hip replacement and one knee replaced, thus I am in continuous pain and a walking pharmacy. This week I had lab tests and for the first time my liver enzymes were elevated ALT 94, AST 42, BUN 33, and carbon dioxide is low at 20; all signs of something wrong with liver. I have had some nausea and about a month ago experienced right upper quadrant pain for about a week. I am guessing I need to decrease diclofenac which I have been on for years and hold Celebrex I was to switch to Monday; guessing my primary care physician will order an ultrasound.

Comment from: grandad2014, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: May 30

I had blood work come back with calcium level of 10.5, AST of 52 and ALT of 70. I have been having a ton of joint and bone pain, stomach pain, and am tired all the time. I thought I might have arthritis since my mother had rheumatoid arthritis but am now worried about possibly having hyperparathyroidism, parathyroid tumor, or liver damage. I will have a follow up visit with my doctor but I am scared.

I started with a rash that covered my trunk, and inside arms and legs. It did not itch and was asymptomatic for years. After 3 or so years I would spike a temperature and the rash would occur as before. Then suddenly increased temperature, rash, and pain that traveled all over my body, mostly bone pain, lasted off and on for 10 years or so, then disappeared, but noted muscle mass loss was terrible. Now many years later in the last 13 years maybe I had the rash 4 times, but chronic pain. Never did receive a diagnosis.

I had an entire blood panel taken, and everything was normal except my ALT which is 99 and AST enzymes which were 80. I have no other symptoms but my doctor wants a biopsy. I tested negative for hepatitis A, B and C, I wonder if a biopsy is necessary.

Comment from: Beachdog, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: May 21

My AST enzyme was 47 and ALT normal 17. I exercise 7 days a week for 2.5 hours a day. I don't drink, only socially. I am 5 ft. 4 and 107 lb. I did take 1/2 of Advil in the evening to sleep, 4 hours before I had my bloodwork done. Perhaps this caused the minor elevation.

I had a grand mal seizure 2 days ago and when they did my liver blood test, my AST was 103 (normal is 3 to 34) and ALT was 84 (norm is 15 to 42). I have started drinking. I'm not dealing with my husband dying. Also my AGAP was 20. I don’t know what that is and I have blood proteins and ketones in my urinalysis.

I had a physical/blood test for my 60th birthday. I knew I had been drinking too much and my weight shot up to 275 lb. Initial results from my liver blood test 1 month ago are AST 151 and ALT 225; scary. I retested in about 35 days with total alcohol abstinence and 20 lb. weight loss and the results were AST 28, ALT 43. I believe I dodged a bullet and I'll never drink again.

I found out that I had hepatitis C in 1998. I tried interferon twice. I have a very high viral count, my last liver blood test showed all numbers in the normal range including bilirubin total of 0.7. The only numbers that were out of range and high were AST (SGOT) 99 and ALT (SGPT) 158. I've had liver biopsy and it showed nothing abnormal. I take very high amounts of vitamin C every day.

After a couple of episodes of abdominal pain my doctor ordered a liver function test which resulted in a GGT of 1565 and the doctor advised me to stop drinking alcohol as I had liver damage. After months of more pain and tests, I ended up in ITC for 10 days with gall stones blocking the biliary duct, which had to be removed by endoscope. I had my gall bladder removed 4 weeks ago and my GGT is now a more normal 44.

Seven weeks ago I landed in the emergency room with jaundice. My liver blood tests showed my ALT and AST to be 3200. After a week’s stay in the hospital, blood tests, MRCP, and biopsy it was determined to be an allergic reaction to Macrobid. My AST is now 265 and ALT is 166. I'm still on a ton of medicines, but my numbers are still dropping.

My 9 month old daughter has had several liver blood tests, now saying her ALT is 1030 and her AST is 400. She is also having high levels of potassium and a few others. Hepatitis A and B are negative, she doesn't have jaundice. She has been sick for 2 months with a few different things mainly vomiting and diarrhea. I am seeing a gastroenterologist in a couple weeks.

Comment from: Peter, 25-34 Male (Patient) Published: November 05

I have likely been drinking too much. My liver test results are, SGOT is 44, SGPT is 48, and gamma GT is 230. It should be noted that one week prior to the test I broke my arm and went through an operation putting a titanium plate in. Perhaps this could explain the GT level.

My mother’s liver test results were AST 50 and ALT 74 from blood work done on 8/15/14. On 7/17/14 also blood work was done and results were AST 43 and ALT 66. My mother was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and had cirrhosis of the liver. We think she got it from a blood transfusion back in the 80s (not sure).

I'm an alcoholic (20+ years) and landed myself in the hospital in February. My AST was 250 ALT was 90. I was so sick and the stomach pain was awful! Today my results were AST 22! ALT 18! I have worked very hard at turning my health around. I have stopped drinking on my own (after several rehabilitation stints years ago) and have developed a healthy addiction to drinking lots of fresh brewed decaf green tea... lots! And exercise every day. I can’t believe how my liver has responded to my new lifestyle. Turmeric is also an absolute staple every day! My hard work is really paying off!

I went through a pretty serious burnout from my job and during that time, all kinds of physical problems started arising. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis. About a year later, my doctor called to say that my AST level was 93 and my ALT level was 232. This was cause for alarm so I went into the hospital. I am not a drinker but have fatty liver. CT scan, MRI, and ultrasound all looked normal but these levels remain high. Even in the hospital, they could not find the cause of these high levels and I have been sent home with terrible abdominal pain. We still don't know the cause.

I’m under a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression for last two years and also a gastroenterologist. I have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and am shortly to have a Protogram. My other medications are propranolol, lofepramine, ranitidine, quetiapine, diazepam and atorvastatin. For years I have had a very poor immune system. I had some blood tests done recently by my general physician and had an appointment as my fibromyalgia had returned with a vengeance. I am only an occasional drinker. The surgery rang following my blood results and asked me to make an appointment with the general physician regarding the results. I am now worried as she said my liver is badly damaged, my ALT result was 177. She stopped my atorvastatin with immediate effect. I suffer terrible heartburn and was prescribed 400 mg ibuprofen 3 times a day. I feel quite concerned.

I am taking 7 to 8 Norco per day for chronic pain and have been taking this amount for at least the last 2 years. My liver test results showed AST of 55 and ALT of 70. I wonder if this is a high level sufficient to cause permanent liver damage.

I came into the emergency department after lying unconscious and unresponsive for 12 hours due to a heroin overdose. After running my blood tests the medical team found my AST to be 752 and my ALT to be 866. After determining I had severe rhabdomyolysis, they quickly started me on dialysis because it was causing a blockage to my kidneys, causing failure. Thankfully they were able to provide me with the proper medical care I desperately needed at the time. A month later my AST was 41 and my ALT was 58. Thanks to this medical team I am alive and well and have been sober for 7 months now.

My SGOPT was at 84 with normal reference laboratory at 33. I smoke but I don’t consume alcohol.

Comment from: 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: November 06

My AST is 231, ALT is 203, Gamma GT is 201, alkaline phosphatase is 196 and total bilirubin is 8. It was July of this year when I found out my liver enzymes were elevated, the numbers were 250 all four. I don't drink and I don't smoke. I'm on very low dose Synthroid medication. It has nothing to do with fatty liver or any of the hepatitis type.

Comment from: chriss, 55-64 Male (Patient) Published: October 31

I was admitted to hospital 4 months ago with acute liver failure. At first the clinicians thought it was gall stones but after ultrasound, CT, MRI and liver biopsy they thought it was caused by drug induced hepatitis caused by a tablet I was on for 'restless leg syndrome'. After 6 weeks it transpired that I had contracted Hepatitis E by eating either prawns or pork sausages. My ALT levels were 1650 when I first went into hospital, however they have now dropped to 190. ALT is reducing by 30 a week so I'm looking forward to my first drink before Christmas. I am now fit and well (a stone lighter). I haven't had any specific treatment, just been alcohol free and maintained a good diet. It's amazing how the liver repairs itself.

From my liver blood test I have ALT numbers 87 and AST 50, I wonder if these number are in the hepatitis C range.

I went for a normal leg operation, but the very next day I started getting very severe pain on my stomach. It got worse within seconds, and I was rushed to theater. After they discovered a burst ulcer, I had an emergency operation, and was in the ICU on machines for 9 days. But I still don't know what has caused it or how to make sure that it never happens again. It was a very scary situation to be in. But glad that I made it.

I got my results of my liver blood test back yesterday, and the ALT was 64 and the AST was 40. The doctor said it could be caused by cholesterol drugs but it sure scares me.
