I was in Malaysia when I came down with leptospirosis. I had been in Borneo for 10 days beforehand. I went from walking about 10 km and swimming that day to having flu like symptoms that night. The next day I was lethargic and had lost my appetite. It was on the fourth day I was told I might have dengue fever and should go to the hospital, which I did. By now I was having fits, where my whole body shook and it seemed like all the muscles in my body were twitching. Diarrhea and lethargy were increasing. The doctor was still treating me for dengue fever until I started to get short of breath and my heart was racing and the disease was attacking my lungs. The doctor realized it was out of his hands and sent me to another hospital who gave me a blood test which was sent to Kuala Lumpur and would take 3 to 4 days to know what was actually wrong with me. I was looked after but I also witnessed 3 people die while lying in bed. I was finally told what I had and was informed people can die from this which is the way I started to feel. I really thought once I close my eyes that will be it for me. But I did wake. My wife and the insurance company that we took out for our holiday organized for me to be put into a coma and Medevaced to Singapore. The hospital was 1st class and after another 5 days I was able to go home.
