IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) causes me to be constipated most of the time with hard stools that never feel as though my colon is cleared, meaning I feel like I need to go but can’t. However, that constipation is interrupted by painful and quick-hitting bouts of diarrhea. Literally just brown water coming out with horrid abdominal pain. These episodes have a wave like pattern of pain, diarrhea, short relief period, repeat 3 or 4 times, and then I won’t have another episode for a week or so. I stay bloated and gassy. I’ve tried IBS medicines but they left me with diarrhea every single day so that was out. Now I try to manage through behaviors; don’t eat unfamiliar foods in situations where a bathroom isn’t available, reduce my anxiety of an episode by keeping personal wipes, clothes, etc., in my car in case they are needed.
