I still don’t know I have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but I am taking treatment for IBS. My 1st colonoscopy revealed nonspecific terminal ileitis. My 2nd colonoscopy was negative, with all blood investigations being normal. But I have severe symptoms like diarrhea almost every day, can’t have large meals or gassy foods. With 1 bite of mild spicy food, I get diarrhea, with urinary symptoms also. I am still suffering and don’t know if it is IBS or IBD.

I’d been diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) in my teens. I suffered severe bouts of pain and constipation for years. In my thirties it got worse. I was back and forth to doctors, and finally having a colonoscopy in my late thirties revealed nothing. At 47 I was seriously ill and had bowel cancer diagnosed. I had surgery, then chemotherapy and colostomy bag. After a year I went for a reversal of the colostomy but woke from surgery to be told it hadn’t been completed as Crohn’s disease had been seen during the operation. I now manage ileitis.
