I’m 28 with an enlarged spleen. I’ve been healthy all my life and I’m still healthy besides my spleen. I’ve gotten so many tests done (x-ray, MRI, CT, bone marrow biopsy, PET scan) and all tests were normal! PET scan showed I have something in my spleen but can’t be determine what infection or cancer it might be, so I can’t be treated for anything and they are giving me the only option of surgery. I feel like I’m too young for surgery.

My grandfather passed away last night from a ruptured spleen, at age 78. Eight months ago it was enlarged twice the size after tests revealed he had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He underwent radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy which shrunk the spleen back to only 2 percent larger than normal. He was told he was in remission 3 weeks ago. Two days ago it swelled up again, after a 4 hour wait in emergency for a vacant hospital bed he was in a lot of pain, and a couple hours later he lost consciousness then passed away in hospital. The swelling had completely gone at this point so presumably it had ruptured. He was my hero, such a kind gentle man who was loved and will be deeply missed.

I have an enlarged spleen for many years now and yes, it gradually gets worse. When first diagnosed I did not have any symptoms but now I suffer pain, nausea, anemia, and shortness of breath. I feel very cranky, and find it hard to lie down on the left side. I sometimes have iron deficiency and was recently diagnosed with hypoglycemia. I bleed sometimes dark tarry blood. I am 32 now and have done nothing about it all these years! I hope that you get treated before it gets worse, I am now wishing I had done something sooner.
