The following is the treatment I received during my septic shock and endocarditis. After a week at home with high fevers taking Tamiflu as directed for presumably the flu, I was hospitalized after my blood cultures were positive for strep B. and E.coli. I was given vancomycin and gentamicin for the first two days and then switched to Rocephin. After eight days I was released with a PICC line for what they thought would be four weeks. A subsequent scan showed an abscess on my spleen so the antibiotic was extended an additional month. I became allergic to the ChoraPrep and due to skin erosion they moved the PICC to the other arm. The lines have given me a blood clot in each arm, so now I am on blood thinners for the next three months.

I had mechanical valve replacement for endocarditis, a total of 10 weeks of IV antibiotics because the infection was still present during surgery. I was started on Keppra due to strokes/seizures, Toprol XL, lisinopril, and Coumadin for life.

I have been in hospital since the 29th February, 2015 following two months of not feeling well which accelerated over the two weeks before being hospitalized. My symptoms of endocarditis were feeling very cold that required heavy clothing and hot water bottles! Very heavy bouts of severe shaking and often buckets of sweat. Happily, now in hospital, those symptoms are now gone but the antibiotic will continue for a further 5 weeks when hopefully they would have done their job and no surgery will be required.

My mum’s treatment was surgery to replace her heart valve. The operation went well but unfortunately it has been a very slow recovery for her, she is also on an antibiotic for the next 6 weeks.
