I got up each morning for the better part of a week with a progressively stiffer and stiffer neck. But it wasn’t really my neck, it had been encephalitis. I remember describing it as a stiff neck at the base of my neck. I worked 10 hours until 9:30 at night, drove 45 minutes to home, had some dinner, watched TV and fell asleep in the recliner. My partner found me in another room two hours later incoherent, non-verbal and, I’m told, combative with the first responders. I couldn’t tell you. I woke up in ICU four days later on a ventilator.

With encephalitis my equilibrium was off for about a week. Next my speech became mumbled and word-finding was terrible. I was taken to the emergency room and the doctor thought I had a massive stroke. I was briefly paralyzed on the right side, I had high fever and confusion.
