Breast self-exam (BSE) is necessary and does save lives. This article indicates that it is not, which does a disservice to women (and men). I had a mammogram one year and a professional's breast exam (nothing detected on either) 5 months before I detected a lump doing a BSE. Had I waited another year before my next mammogram, the cancer could have spread beyond the lymph nodes. This part of breast care is vitally important and do not discourage its practice. It does save lives as it saved mine!
