I have a family history of ataxia on my father’s side. I was a respiratory therapist for 18 years. I used to drive and was very independent. When I started to fall down I thought I was getting clumsy, and I didn’t think much of it. I noticed my balance was off and I started to see a neurologist. The doctor had mentioned my eyes were shifting and the CT showed my cerebellum was small. Everything went downhill from there. I finally have a diagnosis of spinocerebellar ataxia type 10 (SCA 10). I lost my job because I was a liability.
